  • Advice for a new runner

I’m not in bad shape but I’m not in good shape, either. I want to start running to tone up and get healthier and slimmer. Any tips on how to do that without hurting myself?

Probably the best thing that you can do is get the best shoes you can afford.

I agree with Whirlybird – get good shoes. I would also recommend warming up your body first and starting off slow. For instance, start off running around the block once and then over time gradually increase the length of time you run. You don’t want to overdo it right away.

Good shoes and good clothing. You will want to wear something that will allow you to move freely.

In addition to the other tips already suggested, I would add that as much as you can, try running on a flat and even surface. It is better to have smooth terrain than run on rocks or ground that has holes, bumps and cracks.
