  • artificial sweeteners aren't just in pop

This is sort of an add on to the thread about the study that showed that diet pop doesn’t help with weight loss but it can make calories worse. It’s important to recognize that artificial sweeteners aren’t just in sodas. They’re in a lot of products. Yogurt, candies, and a lot of other things that have “diet” or “light” on the label. So it’s a good idea to read what you’re eating. They sneak it into places you really wouldn’t think it would be.

It's true. They are in a lot of stuff. You should be reading your product labels really closely. not just for this but for other problem ingredients too for that matter.

It is in lots of things...even beer, which I have to say is pretty disgusting. I can tell when artificial sweeteners have been used without even ready the label. You can just taste it. It tastes off and if its aspartame it has that weird metallic flavor. Bleh.

When you buy drinks, in addition to watching for the words "light", watch for the words "low calorie". That's usually a dead giveaway that there are sweeteners in it.

It is very surprising when you learn that artificial sweeteners are actually in a lot of things you might be eating. Essentially what you always need to ask yourself is if a product you are purchasing is free of a specific ingredient or contains less of something or a lower/reduced amount than the original product on which it is based, what has been added to make up for it? Almost always, if something is removed, something else has been used to replace it, and what that something might be is not necessarily good for you.

That's a very good point. The thing that I don't like is that these sweeteners are also often found in products that don't claim to be light or low calorie or diet. They just add it in there without any mention of anything different. Look for product label logos such as "splenda" or "aspartame", or find the chemicals in the ingredients list. Before buying anything or using things from your cupboards, give everything a quick glance.
